With a U.S.-China trade deal apparently on the horizon, there will be an opportunity for the Trump administration to focus on a long-term strategy for dealing with Beijing. Many in Washington advocate a decoupling or containment-style approach, but in a recent speech, Vice President Pence said the Trump administration “seeks engagement with China.” A recent poll by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs found that two-thirds of Americans believe the U.S. should pursue a policy of friendly cooperation and engagement with China. In a new, short video webcast, we explain why engagement is the best strategy for the U.S. to achieve its long-term objectives with China.
