Notice to Our Valued Investors in the Matthews Asia ex Japan Total Return Equity Fund

Following the appointment of Sean Taylor as Chief Investment Officer Designate, we are pleased to announce the following changes to the Matthews Asia ex Japan Total Return Equity Fund effective December 05, 2023. These changes are made in order to help strengthen the portfolio’s “Total Return” investment philosophy and further leverage the firm’s deep bench of investment talent with expertise that will be dedicated to the portfolio.

Sean Taylor, CIO designate, has become a Lead Manager of the Fund 
Inbok Song has moved from Co-Manager to Lead Manager of the Fund 

Following a transition period, Sharat Shroff, Kenneth Lowe and Robert Horrocks will step down from the Fund in order to focus on their portfolio management responsibilities on the Matthews Pacific Tiger and Matthews Asia Dividend Funds with Sean and Inbok sole Lead Portfolio Managers of the Fund. Sharat, Kenneth and Robert will continue to contribute research and company ideas to the portfolio as part of our highly collaborative investment team that leverages the collective intellectual capital of the team across all our portfolios.

The addition of Sean Taylor to the Fund brings significant experience managing total return style strategies and provides an opportunity to add deeper expertise to the Fund. Inbok Song has been moved from Co-Manager to Lead Manager in recognition of the contribution she has made to the Fund. 

The changes being made to the Matthews Asia ex Japan Total Return Equity Fund underscore our long-term commitment to the Fund’s “Total Return” approach and is designed to provide a greater emphasis on alpha generation through bottom-up stock selection and the appropriate approach and tools to manage portfolio risk. 

We are confident that the enhancements to the portfolio management team, who are supported by our 25+ member investment team, will serve our investors well and will ensure a seamless transition.
