Richard H. Gao

Research Principal, China

Richard Gao is a Research Principal focused on Chinese markets at Matthews Asia. In this role, Richard works closely with the investment team and helps set the research agenda and research process related to China. Prior to this role, Richard was a Portfolio Manager at Matthews Asia. Before joining the firm in 1997, he began his career at the Bank of China, first as a loan officer, then as a FOREX Trader in the Treasury Department, and served as an Assistant Manager at the Bank of China, where he was in charge of FOREX trading for import/export companies. Richard received a B.A. in Literature from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and an MBA in International Business from the Dominican University of California. He is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese.
